The Kingdom is Hear...

... and understand.  Yes, I purposefully used the word "hear".  In studying the Gospel parables, Jesus makes it very clear that we are to hear and understand.  The word "hear" is used over 68 times in the Gospels and another 10 times in the book of Revelation (speaking to the churches).  In Matthew 13, we learn several things regarding living in this day and age.  The age this chapter highlights is the time from Christ's birth, ministry on earth in human form, His rejection by Israel, His death and He resurrection until His return to set up His kingdom.  In the meantime, He is ruling this earth from His seated position on the right-hand of the Father.

Jesus often spoke in parables.  We learn much about how He rules and reigns during this age by what He said in parables.  Now, parables are simply stories with a profound message.  In studying them, you must be careful not to read into the passage something that is not there.  Often times, the point of the parable is explained by our Lord.  Speaking in parables is a form of judgment pronounced on those who cannot or will not hear (Matt 13:10-15). However, to those who can hear, parables are a blessed mercy in helping us understand His rule and reign during this age.  They also give us just a glimpse of His character and nature.

Jesus also made the statement, "He who has ears, let him hear" and He often asked His Disciples "Do you not understand these things?".  In Matthew 13:16, Jesus says to His Disciples, "For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it."  What did they see?  The Messiah. What did they hear?  The Gospel.  What were they to do with what they heard? Understand it.  So you see, the kingdom in this day and age is to hear the Gospel and understand it.  In doing so, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you will be able to see Him for who He is and this should cause you to live your life in obedience to Him as your Messiah, King and Lord.
