"For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." (2 Corinthians 4:6-7 ESV)
I love the contrast here. Jars of Clay (earthen vessels) were pottery made to serve a certain function in the household. Some were used for serving guests or just simply out on display (honor - Rom 9:21) and some were used to throw out the garbage or get rid of human waste (dishonor). Sometimes people would hide their valuables in these earthen vessels (unused of course) as a means to conceal their wealth.
We are these earthen vessels full of dishonor and God has chosen us to hold His treasure within us. Not that we have anything to offer, but that the contrast of the Riches of His Glory may be seen in us (Rom 9:23). The fact that God can justly contain His glory inside earthen vessels is a testimony of His "surpassing power". His ability to turn a vessel made unto dishonor and use it for honor is the most amazing display of power.
This is why we praise Him!
